East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. Bond began his academic career in the History Department of Auburn University in 1967. His specialty was French Revolution and Napoleonic Europe. In the three decades that followed, Bond served as department head, associate dean, and finally Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. He served as chair of the faculty senate in 1982-83 and was active in the Western Society for French History and the Consortium on Revolutionary Europe among other professional societies.
